The Finished Quilt

My first quilt! I call it "Star in the Midnight Sky". All that is left is to hand sew the binding to the wrong side! I can do that while sitting on the porch with a pitcher of lemonade and a smooth jazz radio station. I wasn't sure I would, but I actually like quilting. Taking the class insured that I would finish a quilt and would be better able to judge whether or not I have the patience to quilt. Of course, part of the enjoyment came from the class experience. It was a pleasant change to sew around other people. I like the planning stage of quilting the same way I like the planning stage of garment sewing. And, I've already signed up for another quilting class - Free Motion Quilting. This class is only one session and I will learn a skill that will allow me to get more creative on my next quilt. (I'm already thinking in terms of my next quilt!) Considering the way I obsess over matching fabrics, I'm going to start by purchasing fat quarter bundles with fabrics already matched and coordinated. Quilting won't replace garment sewing, but I do enjoy it. And … this was one of my goals for 2009. Actually, I've covered two of my goals: take a class and make a quilt. My sewing skills are expanding!

  5. Wow, this quilt is so nice! You inspire me to get crackin' on the charm quilt for DD.

Now I have a question for you: You crop your head off for garment photos but you show your face here. Hmm, why is that?

  10. Awesome! Congrats on finishing your first quilt. Accomplishing two goals at once isn't bad, either.

  12. Congrats on meeting not one but two of your goals for the year! And the quilt is lovely. Where are you going to hang it? Or is it a quilt for the back of a chair?

  15. Kudos on your first quilt, it's very pretty. Quilting is fun, I've made only a couple of them but I've enjoyed the process.

I recommend 365 fun to stitch quilt blocks. Not only does it have every quilt block idea imaginable, but it also has the patterns for it that you can trace out and use. I've had mine for a while and love it.

I hope you continue with this new expansion in your sewing. Quilts make the most special gifts. :):):)

    Hugs,
    Lory

  17. You continue to amaze me! This is a lovely quilt. Boy, do I wish I had the time to take something like this on. There is a quilting store just near where I live and they hold classes every week ...

  18. Yay! It looks great! You will love the free-motion class. It is a skill that takes some practice, but the best advice I got from a teacher was, "Practice on your quilt" In other words, do a little practice on scraps, but then go for it on an actual quilt. If you obsess over perfection (which I do) you will never get anything done! I chose a fairly plain quilt, but with a patterned fabric that would hide my mistakes for my first venture in I started in the middle and worked my way out, since you get much better by the time you reach the border. I love it! You can see my quilt here:
